Mental health and addiction.

Battery of reasearches shows there is strong correlation between certain mental health illnessess and drug addiction. In our clinic practice it is noted that this hypothesis is strongly true.

What practically noticed is its a vicious cycle phenomenon of mental health issue and addiction. Initially a drug (be it alcohol or any other substance of abuse) provide some relief from the symptoms and signs of mental health. Like, persons of anxiety, depression feel relived with alcohol use. ADHD patients also feel calm with some addictive drugs, due to they provide soothing effect but all these benefits (or we can say starting of wrong pathway) are temporary and in the initial phase only. Once such patients enjoys self treatment, they fall into the trap and this leads to their miserable condition known as addiction or multiplies their initial health issue more worse. Now once they become addicted to certain amount of dose of substance of abuse, they become tolerant to that amount of dose, so to get same effect they need to increase amount of drug. So now a vicious cycle set in, every time patient have to increase amount of dose to enjoy same level of relief.

During treatment of addiction it is very important to ask and observe psychology and psychiatric problem as well as coping management of a person. It requires a lot of experience and time as well.

A multi dynamic approach for treatment requires doctors patience and patients cooperation is much needed. But if patient is willing to quit drugs, treatment is possible.
