Sexual disorder in thyroid disorders

Lot of studies conducted to establish a relation between hypothyroidism and sexual disorder. One of them is reported Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) study, according to this study about 43 percent of women and 30 percent of men suffer sexual inadequacy during the illness.

Reasons for sexual inadequacy in hypothyroidism ranges from low sex desire, performance anxiety, premature ejaculation, pain during intercourse and sometimes erectile dysfunction (ED).  Men with thyroid dysfunction commonly have ED and that is reversible with restoration of the euthyroid (normal levels) state. Although screening for ED is recommended for these men, specific treatment should be postponed for at least 6 months after restoring euthyroidism because it may take this long for ED to spontaneously resolve. As most of these sexual disorders are due to physical and mental health problems associated with hypothyroidism, they are treatable. These health concerns can include common hormonal imbalances such as hypothyroidism.

The big problem in hypothyroid patients, mostly among female partners is low sexual derive (or can say desire).This low desire is noticed in many patients even if thyroid problem is taken care well.  Low libido is just one of many symptoms that may not resolved in many, despite treatment.

I would like suggest some of measure to maintain near normal sexual health.
1. Serum TSH level is best guide show thyroid status, so time to time measurement of     serum TSH level is very important to maintain good thyroid hormone level.

2. Make sure your thyroid drug treatment is optimal.
3.Check your hormones routinely including other hormone levels
4.Have a thorough physical to rule out other non-thyroid health conditions
5.In man, if it is necessary take testosterone supplementation
6.For women, supplement estrogen/progesterone after discussing with physician/sexologist
7.Any other health supplements but as per advised by physician

8. Others like weight management, life style modification, dietary restriction, exercise, yoga, counseling and consultation in proper time.
