The psychology of excess alcoholism
As evident from the title itself, chronic alcoholism is not just a habit but a psychological issue. Excess alcohol intake is double edge sword, as it not only affects physical health but psychological, financial, social and family health are also compromised.
Now the question is how alcohol affects psychology. What happens is whenever a thought relevant or irrelevant comes in our mind, that thought is analysed by higher centres of the brain. These higher centres give green signal or red signal for action to be taken by us after calculating prons and cons of the expected result. After consuming alcohol, it acts on the brain. Alcohol action inhibits high-level processing of brain centres and now thoughts are like an uncontrolled horse, which are ready to run without any limitation and in any direction. These uncontrolled irrelevant thoughts when turns into actions, the problem arises. There is increase aggression, violence, over-promising and sexual adventureness and a lot more.
Persons with some underlying psychological impairment are more prone to addiction because they feel relaxed with alcohol consumption. But this hypothesis is true for the initial phase only, later to get the same desired relaxation (effect) obtained initially, they have to increase the dose of alcohol. And here they land into the problem, they keep on increasing the dose of alcohol to get the same previous experience. They keep on increasing the dose with time. An increased amount of alcohol affects their physical and psychological health.
The recent development in medical science it is now possible to stop or atleast control alcohol intake and also to treat harm caused by chronic intake of alcohol.
Detailed psychological analysis and treatment of underlying disorder are backbone of treatment of chronic alcoholism which includes treatment of depression, anxiety, anger management, coping skills and many more.
Medical treatment supported with behavioral therapy, anger management and coping skills are very effective tools in the management of chronic alcoholism.
